Kristoffer Gunnarsson – 2017 Canucks Prospect Development Camp Round-up

By: Connor Jung

If you told me on draft day that I’d be writing about Kristoffer Gunnarsson a couple weeks later, I would have given it to you — but here we are talking about the 2-year overage 5th round pick.

I had various expectations of players going into the Summer Showcase based on draft position, scouting report and statistical season, and Gunnarsson was near the bottom of that list. The third time draft eligible split his season between the Allsvenskan & SHL, while barely producing at a replacement level. However, the scouting report told us he was a rugged stay at home defenceman with a great physicality component. Not only was that on full display throughout camp, but there was more to his vanilla game than what I read going in. He is a very good skater for his size/weight, and mobility wise, can keep pace with even the fastest players at camp.

Statistically, his offensive production doesn't project him to be anything more than a warm body for depth. But, he has great fundamentals and under the right system and development, could turn into a good NA Pro.
